Workers deserve a share of the gains from automation

Efficiency should not be celebrated as a collective achievement while its rewards belong to only one side.

A worker helps improve a process, documents practical knowledge, and trains a new system. The result requires fewer hours of labor. That can be a real achievement. The dispute is over what happens next: shorter hours, better pay, lower prices, increased profit, or the worker's dismissal.

Knowledge is a contribution

An automation project may depend on investment, technical design, and years of accumulated workplace knowledge. Acknowledging all three does not mean dividing every saving equally. It does mean rejecting the idea that workers are merely a cost removed from the equation. Their contribution should have a place in the bargain.

Savings are not always cash in hand

New systems require maintenance and can create failures or additional work. A promised gain may take time to materialize. That is a strong reason to define the calculation carefully and review actual outcomes. It is not a reason to postpone every discussion of worker benefit until management has already allocated the return.

Negotiate before the change

Possible arrangements include transition pay, shared productivity bonuses, shorter schedules, or training linked to real openings. The right choice will vary. A worker dividend need not prevent restructuring, but it should stop efficiency from becoming a word that means improvement for owners and insecurity for everyone else. Progress deserves support when the people helping produce it can reasonably expect to benefit.
